JSON Beautifier & Explorer

How to format and explore a JSON document in ForgeHub

Paste JSON or open a local UTF-8 file, then use Format JSON with 2 or 4 spaces. Switch to Tree to expand nested data or search keys and values. Choose Minify for compact output, then Copy or Download .json to export the complete current result. Formatting preserves number and string tokens, member order and duplicate keys; it does not repair invalid JSON.

Load one document and choose its layout

JSON Beautifier & Explorer is a workbench for reading and reformatting one document. Begin with Try sample to see nested data before supplying your own. Otherwise, paste into Source or choose Open .json and select a local UTF-8 file. The file is read into the editor; there is no two-document comparison step.

Validation and formatting run after typing pauses. Format JSON runs immediately, as does Ctrl or Command plus Enter. Choose 2 spaces or 4 spaces under Indent for a readable Result. The source remains available in its editable pane, so you can inspect the formatted output without replacing your input text.

Keep the details that formatting should preserve

The formatter changes whitespace between tokens while retaining original number and string tokens, object member order and repeated keys. For example, a document containing 1e3 keeps that spelling rather than rewriting it as 1000. A large integer such as 900719925474099312345 also keeps its exact digits.

Read the validation status for the duplicate occurrence count, then inspect Tree for duplicate key flags. Formatting preserves repeated members; it does not choose a preferred value or merge them. Edit Source yourself if a repeated member needs to be removed before saving.

Open only the branches you need

Select Tree and expand the root, then the relevant object or array. For a response containing orders and account settings, open orders when you need an item value. Container labels show member or item counts. Branch buttons work with Enter or Space, with Right and Left arrows available for expansion and collapse.

A branch loads 200 children at a time and offers another batch when needed. Object paths distinguish member positions: in {"name":"Ada","name":"Sam"}, the entries have paths $["name"]#1 and $["name"]#2. The suffix counts position within the containing object, rather than counting only repetitions of that name. These are inspection paths, not executable JSONPath queries.

Find a key or value and read its location

In Tree, enter text in Find key or value. Search is literal and case-insensitive: pending can find a status value of "Pending". It searches key names and values, so the same query may match a field name in one place and a string value elsewhere. There is no regular-expression or path-query mode.

Search replaces the branch display with matching rows and ancestor paths; it does not expand a filtered interactive tree. The status reports total matches while showing at most the first 100. Narrow a broad query for a more useful list. Clear the search or select Collapse to return to the expandable root.

Resolve an error before saving a result

When parsing fails, the app reports a line and column and offers Select error line. Use it to select the relevant source line, make the correction in Source, and wait for a fresh valid result. Invalid input keeps your source intact but removes the current result and disables export. Formatting does not automatically fix comments or trailing commas.

Keep input within 5 MiB of UTF-8 text, 128 nesting levels and 100,000 values. JSON Lines is unsupported. A modern browser with module Web Worker support is required. Code displays 300 lines per page, but a very long individual line can still be cumbersome; paging does not guarantee fast handling for every document shape.

Choose the output mode and save the whole document

Use Minify for compact JSON, or Format JSON for the selected indentation. Check the output mode before selecting Copy or Download .json. Switching views, paging through Code or narrowing a search does not turn the export into a selected fragment: both controls use the complete current output.

Downloads are named formatted.json or minified.json according to the mode. Your browser controls the save location. If clipboard access fails, a selectable text area provides the complete result for manual copying. Input and results live in tab and worker memory, with no saved history. Save anything you need before Clear or reload; Clear releases app-held data without promising secure erasure.

Frequently asked questions

Does Minify change the text inside strings?

No. It removes formatting whitespace between tokens while retaining raw string tokens, including escape sequences. Spaces inside a string remain part of that string.

Can I edit a value directly in Tree?

Tree is an inspection view with expandable branches and search. Make changes in the Source editor, then let validation and formatting produce a fresh result.

Does Copy include only the visible page or search matches?

Copy uses the complete current formatted or minified output. The code pages, branch batches and first 100 search matches limit the display, not the exported document.

Will the app remove duplicate keys for me?

No. It preserves repeated members, counts duplicate occurrences and flags them in Tree. Edit Source yourself if you need to remove or rename a repeated member.
