How to collect and use upgrades in SpacePakak

Destroy enemies to generate upgrades, then fly into the dropped marker to collect it. R speeds up firing, D adds a second laser, S blocks one hit, and + restores one life up to five. Timed effects last ten seconds of active play; a shield can end sooner when hit. Watch the UPGRADES readout rather than assuming a drop has already helped you.

Create a drop, then collect it

SpacePakak awards an upgrade drop on every fourth kill and on each defeated boss. Destroyed asteroids count toward that kill total too. A drop appears where the destroyed target was; it does not immediately change your ship. Fly into the marker to collect it before it drifts off the left edge of the arena.

Choose Launch flight, use arrows or WASD to move, and hold Space to shoot while the arena has focus. You can also drag inside the arena to move and fire automatically. When a pickup appears, judge the route through nearby enemies and bullets before moving toward it. Destroying the target and safely reaching its drop are separate steps.

Read the marker before changing course

The markers identify four effects: R is rapid fire, S is shield, D is double lasers, and + is an extra life. Drops follow a rotation based on the accumulated kill count rather than a menu where you choose an upgrade. Boss drops use that same kill-count calculation, so a boss does not guarantee a particular effect.

After collection, the UPGRADES readout lists active RAPID, SHIELD and DOUBLE effects with their remaining seconds rounded upward. Extra lives appear in LIVES instead of that timed list. If a marker has passed nearby but neither readout changes, do not assume the effect was collected; your ship must overlap the pickup.

Use rapid fire and double lasers while they last

Rapid fire shortens the delay between volleys from 0.23 seconds to 0.1 seconds. Double lasers makes each volley two parallel shots instead of one. Both require firing input: hold Space or keep a pointer drag active. Collecting either upgrade does not make keyboard flight fire automatically.

Each timed effect starts at ten seconds when collected. Different effects can be active together, so rapid fire and double lasers can combine. Collecting another of the same type sets its timer back to ten seconds; it does not add ten seconds to the remaining duration. For example, collecting another D with four seconds left gives ten seconds remaining, rather than fourteen.

Distinguish shields from damage protection

A shield lasts up to ten seconds but is consumed by the first unprotected hit. That blocked hit does not cost a life and gives one second of temporary protection. Once the shield is gone, it no longer appears in the timed upgrade readout. It is useful protection, but it cannot absorb repeated hits for its full countdown.

An ordinary hull hit removes one life and grants two seconds of temporary protection. The ship becomes translucent during temporary protection, and a white ring is drawn for either a shield or that protection. A ring alone therefore does not confirm that you still have a shield. Check SHIELD in the readout and the current LIVES count to understand your state.

Keep the benefit through a pause, not a restart

The + pickup adds one life, with a maximum of five. At three lives it takes you to four; at five it leaves you at five. Unlike R, S and D, the added life has no ten-second timer. It remains available until damage removes it or the flight is reset.

Pause freezes the simulation, including upgrade countdowns. Leaving the arena focus, window or tab pauses a running flight; use Resume flight when ready to continue. Restart creates a fresh flight with three lives and no upgrades. Reloading also loses progress because gameplay exists only in tab memory. Use Pause when you intend to return to the current flight.

Frequently asked questions

Does every fourth hit drop an upgrade?

No. Drops depend on kills, not hits. Every fourth destroyed target produces a drop, and each defeated boss also produces one. You still need to fly into the pickup to activate it.

Can rapid fire and double lasers work together?

Yes. Their timers are independent. While both are active, firing produces two parallel shots per volley with the shorter rapid-fire delay.

Why did my shield disappear before ten seconds?

A shield blocks one hit and is then consumed. Ten seconds is its maximum active duration, not a promise of ten seconds of continuous protection.

Will pausing waste my upgrade time?

No. The game advances effect timers only while running. Pausing preserves the remaining time; restarting resets all upgrades and begins a new flight.
