Markdown Previewer

How to draft, preview and save Markdown in ForgeHub

Type or paste into The manuscript, or open a local UTF-8 Markdown or text file. The proof updates as you edit. Check the supported formatting, then select Download .md to save the source as draft.md. Drafts live only in the current tab, with no autosave; the 200 KiB limit and simple Markdown subset apply throughout.

Open Markdown Previewer

Start with a short draft or the sample

Markdown Previewer pairs The manuscript, where you edit plain text, with The proof, where formatted output appears. Type or paste a short note to begin. For a meeting recap, put # Project recap on the first line, leave a blank line, then add a sentence and a few lines beginning with a hyphen and a space.

Choose Load sample for a ready-made tour of headings, emphasis, lists, a blockquote and code. It replaces the current manuscript rather than adding to it. If you already have writing in the editor, Undo replace can restore the draft that was there before the sample.

Open an existing local text file

Choose Open .md / .txt to load a UTF-8 file from your device. The app also accepts the .markdown extension. A successful import replaces the manuscript and creates a replacement undo copy, so review the opened text before continuing to edit.

An invalid UTF-8 file is rejected while the accepted draft remains. Save it as UTF-8 in another editor and choose it again. If you edit the manuscript while a file is still being read, the app refuses that replacement and asks you to choose the file again, protecting your newer edits.

Check structure in the live proof

The proof updates after a short pause in typing. Use # followed by a space for a heading, **important** for bold text, and *optional* for italic text. Hyphen-led items become a flat bulleted list; lines such as 1. Prepare notes become numbered list items. A line beginning with > creates a blockquote. The expandable pocket guide provides reminders.

Use backticks around a short code fragment, or put three backticks on separate opening and closing lines around a code block. If the closing fence is missing, the remaining text renders as code. For an unexpectedly long code block, check the closing fence first.

This is a simple Markdown subset. Tables, task lists, nested lists and syntax highlighting are unsupported, and nested list indentation is flattened. Headings shift one HTML level in the proof to preserve the app heading hierarchy. Line breaks within paragraphs remain visible. Treat this proof as the app?s rendering rather than a guarantee of identical output in another Markdown tool.

Understand disabled links and image placeholders

A Markdown link displays its label with a disabled-link indication. Image syntax becomes an alt-text placeholder instead of fetching a picture. An image with the description Team diagram lets you check that description without loading the diagram. Raw HTML appears as text rather than executing.

These choices keep manuscript content inert. They also mean that the proof cannot verify a destination page, check whether an image exists or demonstrate an embedded layout. Your original link and image syntax remains in the manuscript for download.

Recover replacements and respect the byte limit

Clear, Load sample and a successful file import each keep one previous accepted draft for Undo replace. Use it promptly if you replaced the wrong text. A later replacement updates that single copy, and using Undo replace consumes it. This control is not a version history.

The limit is 200 KiB of UTF-8 text. The manuscript footer shows bytes alongside words; use the byte count when approaching the limit. An oversized edit or file is rejected while the previous accepted draft stays intact. Shorten the text or choose a smaller file before retrying.

Download the source before leaving

Choose Download .md when the manuscript is ready. It requests a file named draft.md containing the accepted Markdown source. The browser controls the save prompt. This saves editable text, rather than exporting the formatted proof as HTML or PDF. Selecting and copying the manuscript text is also a fallback.

Drafts and the replacement undo copy exist only in tab memory. There is no autosave or persistent draft storage. Refreshing or closing the page loses both. Download a copy before leaving and reopen that file when you want to continue later.

Frequently asked questions

Does opening a file upload my writing?

No. File reading happens locally and the draft stays in tab memory. The app has no upload endpoint, account or persistent draft storage. Download explicitly when you want to keep a file.

Why does my image show text instead of a picture?

Images deliberately become inert alt-text placeholders, and links stay disabled in the proof. The preview does not fetch remote content; the Markdown source retains the syntax for export.

Can Undo replace recover a draft after refreshing?

No. It restores one draft from before Clear, Load sample or a successful file import within the current tab session. Refreshing or closing discards the draft and undo copy.

Can I export the formatted page as a PDF?

There is no PDF export. Download .md requests draft.md containing your Markdown source. The proof is for checking the supported syntax while you write.
